Tipset Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 10, 2026
The short version
- Tipset works without an account or sign‑in.
- Bills and calculations are processed on your device and are not sent to PatrickWS.
- Receipt recognition happens on your device, and receipt images are not uploaded to PatrickWS.
- Tipset includes no ads and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
- Tipset Pro purchases are handled by Apple. PatrickWS does not receive your payment card details.
Who this policy covers
Tipset is operated by Patrick Stevens under the PatrickWS name. In this policy, “PatrickWS,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to the operator of Tipset. This policy applies to the Tipset app on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The PatrickWS website may have separate privacy practices that are described elsewhere on the site.
What Tipset doesn't need
You don't need an account to use Tipset, and there is nothing to sign in to. Tipset doesn't ask for your name, email address, phone number or location. The calculator and receipt scanning are processed on your device and do not require a PatrickWS server.
Your calculations
The amounts you enter or scan, including the bill, tip percentage, tax, fees, split and rounding choices, are used by the app on your device to show you the result. They are not sent to PatrickWS or to any PatrickWS-operated server.
So you don't lose your place when you switch to another app, Tipset keeps the current bill on your device. If you come back more than two hours later, or tap Clear, Tipset starts a new bill. Tipset does not keep a history of past bills.
Receipt scanning
Receipt scanning is optional, and only happens when you tap Scan.
- Camera. The first time you scan, iOS asks whether Tipset may use the camera. The camera is used only to photograph the receipt you are scanning. You can change this at any time in the Settings app.
- Photos. You can also choose an existing photo of a receipt. Tipset uses Apple's photo picker for this, so it only receives the single photo you pick. Tipset does not ask for access to your photo library.
- On-device text recognition. Tipset reads the receipt with Apple's on-device text recognition (the Vision framework) to find amounts like the subtotal, tax, fees and total.
- Not uploaded or saved to Photos. Tipset processes receipt images and recognized text on your device. Tipset does not upload receipt images or recognized receipt text to PatrickWS, and it does not save scanned receipt images to your photo library. Only the amounts you confirm are added to your calculation.
Information stored on your device
Tipset uses standard on-device app storage to remember:
- your settings: tip buttons, starting tip, custom tip, haptics, receipt scanning preference, appearance and theme
- the current bill, as described above
- how many of the 3 free receipt scans you have used
- whether you have seen the Welcome screen
- a note of whether Tipset Pro was unlocked last time, so your theme appears straight away. The App Store remains the record of whether you own Tipset Pro.
On Apple Watch, Tipset stores the preferences it receives from your iPhone, your last-used tip, and the calculation you are working on so you can return to it.
This information is stored in the app's local storage on your device and is not sent to PatrickWS. Deleting Tipset removes the app's local data from that device. If you back up your device to iCloud or a computer, copies may remain in those backups according to your backup settings.
Apple Watch
If you use Tipset on Apple Watch, your iPhone sends three preferences to your paired Apple Watch using Apple's WatchConnectivity framework: your four tip button percentages, your starting tip, and whether haptics are on. This goes directly between your own devices, not through any PatrickWS server. Your bills, calculations, receipts, theme and Tipset Pro status are not sent to the Watch. The Watch app works on its own without your iPhone nearby.
Sharing a calculation
When you tap Share, Tipset creates a short text summary of the calculation (such as the bill, tip, total and each person's share) and opens Apple's share sheet. Nothing is shared unless you choose to. You decide where it goes, such as Messages or Notes, and whatever app or service you choose handles it under its own privacy policy. We don't receive a copy.
Tipset Pro purchases
Tipset Pro is an optional one-time in-app purchase made through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment. We do not receive or store your payment card details. Tipset asks the App Store (using Apple's StoreKit) whether Tipset Pro has been purchased on your Apple Account so it can unlock unlimited scans and the premium themes. Apple handles purchase information under Apple's Privacy Policy.
Analytics, advertising and diagnostics
Tipset does not include third-party analytics, advertising, tracking, or crash-reporting SDKs. It shows no ads, does not use an advertising identifier, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Apple may provide us with crash reports and aggregated usage information from users who choose to share diagnostics and usage data with app developers in their device settings. This information is provided through Apple's developer services and is governed by Apple's policies.
Selling personal information
We do not sell your personal information or use it for targeted advertising. Tipset does not send your calculator or receipt data to PatrickWS or to third-party advertising or analytics services.
Apple services Tipset uses
Tipset relies on features built into Apple's platforms: the App Store and StoreKit for purchases, the camera, photo picker and on-device text recognition for receipt scanning, the share sheet for sharing, and WatchConnectivity for Apple Watch. Tipset does not include third-party services or SDKs. Apple's own handling of information is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Children
Tipset is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. Tipset does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example by email, please contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Because Tipset keeps your information on your device, it is protected by your device's own security, such as your passcode. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but Tipset is designed to keep as little information as possible and to keep it on your device.
Changes to this policy
If Tipset changes the way it handles information, we will update this policy and the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
Contact
If you have a question about this policy or about Tipset, contact us at contact@patrickws.com. If you contact us by email, we receive your email address and anything you include in your message, and we use that information only to respond to you. We will delete your messages on request.
